About those barbarians who defeated the Ancient Roman Empire. They are presented by mass media as retarded orcs who defeated advanced elves.

But it’s not that simple. The empires had autocracy. The emperor’s power was absolute (divine or heaven-given as they believed). Laws were made by emperor’s will, and any opposition was destroyed.

And now think about this: the barbarians had military (!) democracy.

Also, military service in the empire was forced, and the imperial soldiers weren’t really motivated to win. Meanwhile, the barbarians fought because it was easier to grab things from others than to produce them themselves. Barbarians were also running from climate change and attacks from hostile Northern tribes. It was like a domino effect. And if the empire refused to accept barbarian refugees, the barbarians would simply attack.

Rome in winter

I just heard something from a Russian philologist – here’s the link to her video in Russian: vk.com/wall-130890040_29941.

She said that in ancient human societies, when a man went hunting for food and the mother stayed in the cave with a baby (and couldn’t get food for herself), the male had two choices:

Eat all the food by himself without sharing – and then the female and the baby would die.

Share the food with female and child and then the whole group would survive and population will grow.

This reminded me of my own personal experience with a little “society” of rats.

I once had a male and a female rats living in the same cage. (I didn’t know they had to be separated to different cages when not breeding, honestly I’m really ashamed of that now, I’m sorry.)

The female rat was constantly pregnant. I gave the babies to a pet store, and she got pregnant again right away.

The thing is even though I fed them well, the male rat would still sometimes eat the babies.

And not only that – he would also fuck the babies rats (his own daughters!). I found out about this by accident. I gave a baby rat to a friend, and later found out that this rat gave birth even though she lived alone…

So after seeing how this rat society works, I realized: I don’t want that. I’d rather be alone in my own cage than live with a male like that. I dont want to get into hopeless situation when I cant earn relying on a male who can decide one day that he doesnt want to feed female and child but want to fuck\eat own children. The probability of unhappy result of a marriage is too high to take the risk.

And I think none of the women likes to hear after childbirth – eggs producers are not made to cock-a-doodle-doo.
